With the recent legalization of marijuana use in Michigan, a new sparked interest in the associated health benefits it can provide has risen. While the popularity of marijuana has surged, research on its therapeutic properties has lagged well behind. Chronic pain is the most common reason people seek use of marijuana. Most recently, a study has been completed, in the December 2018 edition of Monitor on Psychology, to show the outcome marijuana has on patients diagnosed with PTSD. The outcome was remarkable. The study proved that patients had improved cognitive performance, reduced symptoms of anxiety as well as reduced use of conventional medications including opioids, anti-depressants and mood stabilizers. Although positive outcomes were revealed, it is essential that patients still follow through with outpatient treatments to best monitor their symptoms.
More research is said to be done revolving around this topic. Holistic treatment is on the rise and its seems that more than ever it is making its way into the mental health world.
